    Description

For your approval, Alex Koppel GmbH Solingen, K98 bayonet.  Very nice condition, frog marked 42.  Bayonet is in great condition, hadn't been sharpened and blade retains most of original finish.  Grips are solid, frog is tight over all a really nice find.
"Bonn, Rhine, A, and  March '45" are hand etched into the metal on the handle.  If you research those items you come to March 7th 1945 and the crossing of the Rhine at Remagen.  Company A of the 14th tank battalion of the 9th armoured division were in the thick of it that afternoon. They were instrumental in pushing the Germans back and taking the Ludendorf bridge at Remagen and crossing the Rhine.  It must have made quite the impression on this trooper the scratch this message on to a captured bayonet.

I've had this over 20 years, bought it from the daughter of a vet in South Dakota.  She told me her dad was a tank driver.  Wish I would have dug deeper.  I didn't see the marking right away... Low opener no reserve guaranteed old and original.
