In 1942, shortly after Pearl Harbor, the American government commissioned the Sheldon A. Claire Company of Chicago to produce a series of patriotic posters to hang in war production plants. Over the course of the war Claire produced 30 different "This is America" posters, each focusing on a different aspect of American culture that was worth fighting for. The posters were rolled out slowly, one-at-a-time, in plants across America and the introduction of a new poster was an eagerly awaited event.
