Nipper, the RCA Dog, began in 1884 when a small stray terrier mix was found on the streets of Bristol, England. Adopted by Mark Barraud, a scenery designer at the Princes’ Theatre, and named “Nipper” because he would often "nip" at the backs of visitors' legs. He served as a model for a painting by Mark’s brother Francis Barraud - "His Master's Voice". This image became one of the world’s best known trademarks. The famous dog and gramophone trademark, was used by Berliner's American successor Victor Talking Machine Co. which later became RCA (Radio Corporation of America).
