A beautiful  ROYAL WINTON GRIMWADES LEAF WARE Set of 2 Small SAUCE BOATS w/UNDERPLATES, HAND PAINTED Light GREEN w/Gold, Circa 1950's from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England
    DESCRIPTION:
This superb quality china has gold that is bright and vivid on the porcelain.  The shape of the underplate plate forms a leaf with a neat gold trimming.  One side has the rim gold outlined and the most of the veins painted gold.  The other side has an over wash of a darker green and no gold on the rim or veins.  The decorator used a minimal color palette of light green, dark green and gold.  This is really very striking.

    HISTORY/MARKS:
Royal Winton was originally known as Grimwade Brothers.  The pottery was established in 1885 by Leonard Lumsden Grimwade at Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshie, UK.  By 1890 showrooms had been purchased in Stoke-on-Trent as well as London.   In 1900, Grimwade was joined by his brothers, Edward and Sydney, incorporating the business as Grimwades, Ltd.  Its a measure of the company's success that by 1906 Grimwades Ltd. was operating from 4 factories within Stoke-on-Trent.  The business expanded rapidly merging and acquiring a number of other potteries.  By the early 1920’s, they were one of the largest manufacturers of earthenware.  In 1928, “Marguerite,” the first Royal Winton Chintz pattern, was launched becoming an immediate success.  Following an advertisement in the “Potteries Gazette” in 1929, Royal Winton became the established trade name for Grimwades Ltd. & has remained so through to the present day.  Note that current day production from Royal Winton is shipped only to addresses in UK.  Source for this is the website royalwinton in the UK.  Leaf Ware was produced from 1943-early 1950's.
