STALAG LUFT III, SCENE OF THE “GREAT ESCAPE”. World War II pen knife recovered from the site of Stalag Luft III, the P.O.W. camp located in Sagen, Germany that was the scene of the “Great Escape”. The knife measures 3.5” by .75”, was recovered circa 1950s, and is in poor to good condition with oxidation to the steel components and numerous dings and scratches (possibly consistent with this knife being used to help dig the tunnels).

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Rodney Hilton Brown, the founder of “The War Museum”: “Pen Knife recovered from the site of Stalag Luft III, the P.O.W. camp that was the scene of “The Great Escape”. From the personal collection of the museum’s founder.”. Stalag Luft III was managed by the Luftwaffe to house Allied airmen downed over Germany. It was the scene of two famous escape plots, both involving tunneling: one in 1943, which was depicted in the film
The Wooden Horse
(1950), and another in 1944, immortalized in the 1963 film
The Great Escape
(1963) starring Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn. This knife and other artifacts were excavated from Stalag Luft III by townsfolk and farmers native to the town of Zagen, Poland (formerly Sagen) in the 1950s until it became illegal to relic hunt.
KNIFE IS ACCOMPANIED WITH A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY FROM UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES AND ITS CONDITION IS POSSIBLY CONSISTENT WITH BEING USED TO HELP DIG THE TUNNELS
The knife has been authenticated by and is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity from University Archives, the leading historical documents and relics dealer in the world. Three similar items recovered from the site of Stalag Luft III were recently auctioned: a plate sold for ,250 at Bonhams in June of 2014, a box sold for ,625 at Profiles in History in December of 2014, and a sign sold for ,245 at Alexander Historical Auctions in March of 2016.
