    Description

ARKAS Magnetic Compass  Magnetic compass for binnacle, made by ARKAS of Copenhagen, Mid 20th Century  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  The removable weather shielding hood has sliding panels, with an adjustable lamp mounted on top.  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  The phosphor bronze case & compass is gimbal mounted with a floating magnetic compass card marked ARKAS Copenhagen.   ARKAS Magnetic Compass  The compass-card is painted in egg-white & the degree graduations in black ink. The cardinal points are marked in bold white lettering on a black background, with “North” in the form of a ship’s wheel surrounding a vessel’s bow and ARKAS.  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  Many ships and yachts were fitted with high quality ARKAS compass binnacles (and later by Decca ARKAS or Decker ARKAS). Little company information could be found for this model.  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  The compass cap ring, the gimbal ring & the compass card are all marked with a very low serial number: 0489  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  The bottom has a round brass tag with name, model number, serial number and city of production.  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  The whole heavy gauge bronze unit with the hood weighs about 62 lbs., and measures:  ~ 15" High x 13½" Diameter  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  Compass cap ring diameter: ~ 10"  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  An unusual construction, where the top & bottom of the compass housing is glass, presumably for illumination from below.  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  This compass will be shipped with the compass fluid still inside.  It is in excellent condition and working (of course, it will need professional adjustments and installation with a binnacle to make it functional at sea).  Due to its enormous weight, the item will be packed in three separate boxes for easier handling.  The light bulb has not been tested & the attached electrical wiring needs to be replaced. The bronze has been polished and the instrument is clean, ready for display.   ARKAS Magnetic Compass  The compass card appears to have an inclination balance weight loose. It is seen, from below, at the side of the bowl in the image.  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  An inspection number “2472” “OK” and the date “15-6- 67” have been scratched on the top cover glass.  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  The holes on the side of the base are for mounting brackets which would support iron quadrantal spheres on opposite sides.  ARKAS Magnetic Compass  This beautiful large brass instrument will enhance any nautical collection. Suitable as an office, den or library decoration. GREAT GIFT
