ITALY / VENICE - ANDREA DANDOLO 1342 -1354 AD1 MEZZANINO - SILVER Coin -
SUPER RARE!!!
Obverse:
AN DADVL SM VENE DVX,
Doge and St. Mark holding banner
Reverse:
XPS RESVRESIT
, Christ emerging from coffin.
VERY SCARCE
The striking thing about this coin is clearly the imagery chosen. Coins that depict Christ are plentiful going centuries back but depicting the Resurrection is fundamentally harder and handled in quite an innovative way I believe. One historian I recently also pointed out that the Black Death, that claimed 75 millions lives, had peaked right during the issue of this coin. The linkage between coin time and grim times is hard to discount.
