Offered is a vintage piece of

a Chicago & Alton Railroad Clear Extended Base Lantern Globe.
The Lantern Globe is in excellent condition, free of cracks, scratches, or cloudiness. There is one chip out of the extended base, but it does not show if the globe is seated in an extended base lantern frame (see photos). It is etched in large letters “C&ARR.” The etching is light and was difficult to photograph but is visible in the photos. As with any globe that was used in actual railroad service there may be some minor nicks on the top and bottom rims that don’t show when the globe is seated in the lantern frame. This globe will fit most tall globe frames that require a 5-3/8” lantern globe but fits best in a frame that takes an extended base globe without a globe seat.
The Chicago & Alton Railroad existed from 1862 to 1931. From 1931 to 1947 it was known as just the “Alton,” and was under the control of the Baltimore & Ohio. In 1947 it became part of the Gulf Mobile & Ohio and remained such until 1972 when the GM&O merged with the Illinois Central creating Illinois Central Gulf. In 1988 the name changed back to Illinois Central which lasted until 1988 when it was taken over by Canadian National.
