THE SHIP'S BINNACLE
https://lannangallery.com/pages/binnacles
The binnacle is simply the housing for the ship's compass. There are several variations to the housing dependent upon the size and/or style of the vessel. For large ships, the binnacle is usually a stand of sturdy mahogany with a top hood over the compass usually made of brass. With the introduction of iron-clad ship's the compass magnetic deviation increased and there was a need to compensate for the deviation by arranging iron near the binnacle. This developed the iron spheres or compensating magnets or compensating balls that are positioned on both sides of the compass. Often times these irons are painted red and green to signify the appropriate side of the ship the compass housing should face

https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-brass-ships-skylight-binnacle-1903553566
This a ship's Binnacle. I have seen some called a skylight, because of the glass all the way around. The name plate on the side says, Perko, Perkin's Marine Lamp & Hardware Corp. Brooklyn NY, USA. The compass is marked on the bottom, Robert E. White Instruments, Inc., Boston, Mass. On the face of the compass it is marked Star Pathfinder #30153, Milton, Mass. I have seen a few on the internet pricing up to 00! I believe that this one is missing a finial on the top and on one side the clamp holding the glass top is missing. There are six glass panels, there is a lightbulb and cover at the top of the glass cover, not sure if there were wires at one time?? I didn't want to take anything apart. This binnacle has not been cleaned or polished, all original glass. We are willing to hear offers, I didn't see that option when setting prices, please make an offer. Please ask any questions you might have, we have other nautical brass items to list, so please check them out too.***Not sure how to package this item. I am wondering if there is a special way to secure the compass for shipping purposes. If you know please let me know.

EARLY PERKO SKYLIGHT BINNACLE & COMPASS, 1930'S-40'S
https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/early-perko-skylight-binnacle-compass-77731888
It is very unusual to find any piece of delicate nautical gear of this age that has never been damaged, molested, modified, allowed to corrode, or made into a lamp. we have a fine one. Originally (?) on a vintage motor boat of 30 or 35 feet in length, whose photo is included in the sale, this binnacle has never seen a power buffing wheel, and appears to have last been hand polished sometime during the Nixon administration. Night navigation was possible, as the original bulb socket is at the top of the skylight. (Light sources in later binnacles came from the base of the binnacle.) The mounting flange is 9” in diameter, and the total height is 12”. The compass face is approximately 5.5”, and the compass is made by Star, of Boston. The compass itself is in excellent condition. Overall condition is 9+ on the infamous scale of 10. The patina on the brass binnacle is even and appears to be at least several decades old. This is a fully usable, very attractive navigation instrument for a classic (or even a newer) boat, either power or sail. Perko began life as Perkins Marine Lamp Corp. in 1907 and adopted the trade name “Perko” in 1922. It was, and still is, a family-owned business, making quality marine fittings, among other products. As mentioned earlier, one does not often run upon 70-year-old items such as this in original condition - and at a reserve that is significantly less than the price a similar modern-day replacement would command. E-mail me early for more information, or detail photos. Bid early, bid often, and don't let this good one get away. The free listing tools. List your items fast and easy and manage your active items.

THE PERKO STORY
https://www.perko.com/perko_story/
The PERKO Story consists of many interesting pieces. They make up a modern-day marine hardware success story that goes back over 100 years!
EARLY BEGINNINGS
Frederick Perkins
The story starts with Frederick Persky, who later became known as Frederick Perkins. He was a Russian immigrant who was schooled in Germany as a machinist and tool-and-die maker. Frederick came to the United States in the early 1890's and soon became employed as a machinist for E.W. Bliss & Company in Brooklyn, New York. In the early 1900's, he and a partner began operating a business, F. Persky & Company, Lantern Manufacturer, out of the basement of his house.
1900-1907 Louis E. Perkins
In 1907, Frederick's son Louis joined him in the business, and together they enlarged both the product line and the manufacturing facilities. By 1912, they had seventeen employees and made a wide range of marine lanterns and products.
1907-1912 National Marine Lamp
The business continued operating until 1913 when Frederick became president of National Marine Lamp Company, based out of Forestville, Connecticut. Frederick and Louis left that company in 1916 and moved back to Brooklyn, New York, where they started Perkins Marine Lamp Corporation. Five generations later, PERKO is still a privately owned, family operated corporation, which is unusual in today's marketplace.
1913-1916 THE PERKINS MARINE LAMP CORPORATION
Perkins Marine Lamp Corporation Catalog No. 001 and early lights
Perkins Marine Corporation was initially known as Perkins Marine Lamp, Inc. The original focus was on the manufacture of hand formed sheet metal products for the marine market. The first catalog was published in 1916, with a product line as diverse for its time as PERKO's catalog is today.
It included a full range of kerosene and electric lanterns for small and large boats, ventilators, chart cases, signaling devices, mooring buoys, pumps and a variety of spare parts. These products, fabricated from brass, copper and galvanized sheet metal, began what was our ongoing reputation for producing high quality products. We still do some hand forming and soldering today, much as it was done in our early years.
In 1922, the "PERKO" trademark was instituted.
Each new product (and there were many) utilized the latest, sophisticated metal manufacturing technology and customers came to expect the highest standard of excellence from PERKO products.
1930'S GROWTH AND EXPANSION
The company name was changed to
Perkins Marine Lamp and Hardware Corporation
in 1932 to better reflect the growing line of products being offered at that time.
The company enjoyed exceptional growth into the 1930's as our reputation for quality increased, and new manufacturing facilities were added. The original one-story plant grew to five stories and six more buildings under the direction of Louis Perkins. By the time Frederick Perkins passed away in 1947, Perkins Marine Lamp and the PERKO trademark had become a major factor in the fast-growing marine industry.
Marvin Perkins MOVE TO FLORIDA
Louis Perkins became president after Frederick's passing. In 1947, Louis's son, Marvin, joined the company. Expansion continued until they finally ran out of space in Brooklyn.
Roy Hollenbeck
Roy Hollenbeck came on board in 1960 to plan and coordinate the company's move to North Miami, Florida and oversee construction of the new facility. His extensive experience in manufacturing was instrumental in our successful move from a number of buildings to one large plant with all operations under one roof. Upon the passing of Louis in 1964, Marvin assumed the top responsibility and continued the growth and innovation that exists to this day.
Once settled in Florida, we established our own bronze factory. By 1965, a 47,000 square foot extension was completed, housing the sophisticated die-casting system that today produces zinc, bronze and aluminum products. PERKO is the only domestic, marine manufacturer producing die-cast bronze parts, well known for strength, uniformity and quality.
