Here we have
3
new
undecorated Athearn 50' Boxcar bodies as shown. Each model shell does include a floor and upper door guides, but nothing else, which means no doors or roofwalk. These are just some parts and NOT a complete kit. You will need to scrounge the missing parts yourself. We located the parts we did not have to finish these cars here on
eBay
or from a few
manufacturers
like Accurail or Kadee, and in our own "scrap" parts box too. It's all part of the fun of building your own models and saving a few bucks in the process.If you want to model the roofwalk era, either obtain the original factory parts or even better, pick up the etched metal roofwalks from Kadee and other manufacturers.
(Something else to think on, if you have any older
Blue Box
cars floating around? You know the ones with the too light pad printed lettering. You could buy stuff to strip them, but why do that when undecorated shells can help make life so much easier and less caustic. Just a thought.)
This car style is perfect for the steam / transition era model builder and scratch-builders out there by adding running boards up top. Post 1970 modelers can fill in the roofwalk holes and model a car with running boards removed when that became mandatory. Make a new car using your own parts, or use this shell to build a shed, MOW installation, or some other type of storage outbuilding. These bodies have a 14'6" door opening. Accurail, Kadee, and Athearn make various doors suitable for this model car body.
Most types of doors will require some fitting to place on the car correctly, see the last photos here as an example. We chose to use one 7' and one 8' door per side to give the car the proper look.
We've seen these cars re-detailed with the etched metal running boards up top, and they look much better than factory stock with just a few minor upgrades. Another good idea besides better running boards and doors is to use a proper Kadee brake wheel on the "B" end, you'd be surprised what a "scale" detail part or two can do to change the looks of an 'old school' model train car.

Yes, we are happy to give you a combined shipping total, but you should e-mail us and request it when you are all finished shopping and the auctions you are bidding on have ended. We try and watch for this, but are far from perfect.
