ANTIQUE JAPANESE LONG KATAGAMI STENCIL CAMELLIA TSUBAKI FLOWERS & GARDEN

Description

This is an antique Japanese stencil  for dying katazome fabric called
Katagami
which date from the early Showa Era (c. 1930). Katagami is the Japanese craft of making paper stencils for dyeing textiles.  It is designated as one of the important  intangible cultural properties of Japan. In early days it traditionally centered on the city of Suzuka in Mie prefecture.
This
katagami
stencil has finely cut out images of a many different items including, a motif of
tsubaki
(
camellia flowers). Overall it remains in
very good condition
and measures 35" long by 21"wide (89 x 53.5 cm).
