    Description

Antique Early Ship dry gimballed Compass by POLARIS in original wooden box. Numbered 14420. Very good condition and clean.
The compass is working properly and registering correct North. The gimbal operates smoothly and is complete. The metals have no heavy corrosion. I find no flaking. There is some light black paint loss from scuffs. The box is sturdy and complete. It is made with 16 box joints on the corners. The lid fits securely and has two swivel hooks for hold-down.
WHITE SPOTS AND STREAKS ARE REFLECTIONS AND GLARE FROM THE LIGHTING.
The outer box measures 4 1/2 inches square by 3 1/4 inches high. The number 14420 is etched in the top of the gimbal rim.
The auction house wrote POLARIS on the lot box. I have matched five photos on-line of POLARIS compass faces with this piece. They have the same Fleur de lis symbol and metal bars across the center of the face.
No cracks, dents, gouges or stains. I find very few light surface scuffs commensurate with light use, cleaning and storage. The box has many scuffs, errant paint and wear on the varnish commensurate with 100+ years protecting the compass.
There is an air bubble floating inside (approx. 1/4 " x 3/4 "). I am told bubbles occur during large pressure changes and they can be drawn out through one of two taps on the base. They do not effect the performance of the compass.
This unique and well-made nautical compass is clean, bright and ready for service or display.
WHITE SPOTS AND STREAKS ARE REFLECTIONS AND GLARE FROM THE LIGHTING.
