Description
SEVEN consecutive proof sets from Philadelphia Mint1958 1959 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964
US Mint Uncirculated sealed (envelopes never opened) proof sets. The half dollar, quarter and dime are 90% silver.
Each proof set packaging consisted of a plain yellow outer envelope with the year and the Treasury Department address. The coins are sealed within individual compartments of cellophane wrap with a foil “US Mint Philadelphia” seal, and placed within the envelope between two pieces of cardboard.
Each proof set (1958-1963)
contains the Franklin Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and Lincoln penny. The five coins carry a face value of 91 cents and were originally sold for .10 each.
The 1964 set has the Kennedy Half Dollar instead of the Franklin. 1964 was the only year the Kennedy Half Dollar was 90% silver.
My 98 year-old father was a coin collector. When he passed away recently, he left his coin collection to me. I am thinning it a bit.
On a previous auction, a bidder asked me how I could prove these are authentic. See the last two photographs. They are the mailing label and the postage for the 1959 proof sets, which came in a box that measured about 8" x 8" x 8". The return address is the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. Back in the 50's and early 60's, zip codes were just 2 digits.
The Texas Medical Center was "Houston 25, Texas".
The next photo says, "Postage and fees paid U.S. Treasury Department"
For you history buffs, the Texas Medical Center changed its zip code from 77025 to 77030 about 40 years ago. The Medical Towers, where my dad had his office, the art deco professional medical building built in the late 1950's, was converted into a very cool Westin Hotel recently.
