Description
This fine antique ship's pelorus is made of solid patinated brass and sits within its original box on gimbals. All the compass points are engraved with the dial and have black backgrounds to help make them more visible to the navigator. The sighting vanes are in good condition and one is equipped with a spirit level. The dial turns freely and the screw down locks function well. The dial is a muted bronze color that I think is intentional to minimize reflections. The box that the pelorus sits within is heavy six ply hardwood with a maple or birch outed surface. The overall size of the box is 11.5" x 11.5" x 6.25" deep. The instrument is marked" ATLAS COMPASS & MANUFACTURING CO. / VASHON,WASH.I believe this pelorus dates to the years of WWII or slightly before. It was purchased from the collection and stock of The Island Marine Instrument Co. in Everett, Washington which went out of business after many years in the Northwest.
