    Description

Rare and exceptional English bronze horizontal sundial made and signed by W. & S. Jones, Holborn, London. The numerals are Roman, and the central design is of a six pointed star with the 1/4" thick gnomen or pointer protruding from the central circle. The graphics and the lettering are exquisite and clearly cut with no detractions at all. The workmanship is exceptional. There are three holes for attachment to a stand or table.
On the underside is this handwritten explanation:
    "Late 18thC English sundial
    precision gnomen set at
    LAT 54 (degrees) 55' 26" corresponding
    to Sunderland England near
Scotland border. This piece was made to order and works
in a vertical orientation ~ very rare"
    Size: 8 3/4" diameter x 1/8" thick (gnomen 1/4" thick)
Weight: 2 pounds, 9 ounces (unpacked)
    Condition: very good
This 18th century sundial is a museum quality piece and would compliment any collection of early scientific instruments. Equally impressive as a table piece or wall hanging.
PLEASE NOTE: the stand is for display only and not included in the sale.
